New Delhi: Luck has not been on Ishan Kishan’s side this year. The Jharkhand batter has hogged the limelight for all the wrong reasons in 2024 since being dropped from the central contracts list at the beginning of the year. Ishan dominated the headlines after taking a break from India’s Tour of South Africa in December 2023 and despite being advised to play red-ball domestic cricket was reluctant to play in Ranji Trophy games. This led to his axe from the central contracts list along with Shreyas Iyer.
While Ishan’s non-selection in Test cricket is understandable, his absence from India’s white-ball squads has been cited as unfair. Despite boasting a superb record in both ODIs and T20Is, the Jharkhand wicket-keeper batter has been ignored continuously by the national selectors.
While several A-listers took the field in the first round of the Duleep Trophy, Ishan was ruled out due to a knee injury. Despite not being named in the updated squads for Round 2, Ishan made a shocking return by becoming part of India C’s playing XI. Ahead of the Round 1, Ishan was named in Team D but was later ruled out due to an injury and being replaced by Sanju Samson.

As soon as Ishan’s name was announced in India C playing XI for their Round 2 match with India B at the Rural Development Trust Stadium B, Anantapur, fans on social media demanded justice for the Jharkhand batter. “Bring back Ishan Kishan” started trending on social media as fans asked the sectors to bring him back to the team.

Ishan holds the record for the fastest double-century in ODI cricket. He completed the milestone in 126 deliveries against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2023, surpassing Chris Gayle’s record (138 balls).
