Former England coach Gareth Southgate in no hurry for next assignment

New Delhi: England’s former manager Gareth Southgate has mentioned that he is yet to decide on his next venture. However, he has said that he is open to being back in football as well as outside football. Southgate stepped down in July after England lost their second consecutive UEFA Euros final.

The 54-year-old had led the team for eight years in 102 games and had engineered the team into a strong unit. After his resignation, England haven’t found a permanent replacement. However, interim manager Lee Carsley was successful back-to-back in his first two games with England against Ireland and Finland.

There have been media reports about Southgate moving to Manchester United after their current manager, Erik ten Hag, hasn’t been producing the desired results for a while now. Southgate is also being linked to moving with UEFA, the European football governing body, as their technical observer.

Southgate has himself admitted that he has been getting quite a few offers but he is mindful of where to move next. He has mentioned that he is open to moving away from football completely. For now Southgate is taking time off and recharging himself, and considering his options carefully.

Though Southgate wasn’t able to bring home silverware, he has said he was proud of having shaped the team into a side that consistently reached the knockout stages of the international tournament. Under Southgate, England reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, as well as made two appearances in the final of the European Championships.

Southgate’s tenure was marred with public backlashes who weren’t fond of his defensive tactics. He was often criticised for not making the team to press more and play aggressively. Recently, whilst reflecting on his tenure, he mentioned that the decisions the team made were based on data and ultimately had the goal of winning, and he had given everything to do a good job for England.

Southgate has maintained that he is open to working outside football as well but hasn’t commented on his next move.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
