New Delhi: Tennis ace Novak Djokovic showcased his brilliance and experience on Thursday as he defeated Frenchman Corentin Moutet 6–3, 6–2, 7–6(1) in the second round of the French Open 2025 at Roland-Garros. Dealing with a partial crowd at Court Suzanne Lenglen, which was supporting their spirited home boy, the 38-year-old Serbian advanced to Round 3 at this Grand Slam event for a record 20th time.

The match started with characteristic precision from Djokovic as he broke Moutet early and took the first set 6-3. He continued to dominate the 26-year-old in the second set and ultimately secured it 6–2 with a combination of strategic net play and deep groundstrokes. The third set, however, presented challenges to both players.

Moutet, who was buoyed by the home crowd, effectively broke Djokovic’s serve to lead 4–2. The 24-time Grand Slam winner was dealing with a blister on his left big toe, which required a medical timeout, but somehow managed to break back and level the set up. At 5-6, Djokovic faced a set point but saved it with a classic forehand winner, eventually pushing the set for a tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Djokovic seemed to have gone all out against the French opponent as he elevated his game and capitalised on Moutet’s errors, eventually clinching it 7-1. The match went for over three hours as Djokovic hit 43 winners and won 78 per cent of his net points.

Round 3 against?

After the game, Djokovic acknowledged the energy of the crowd on Court Suzanne Lenglen that sat in for such a long period. He even addressed his issue with the toe, saying that while the blister was painful and required draining, he would have ample time to recover before his next game. The victory over Moutet extends Djokovic’s unbeaten streak against French players at the French Open to 12 matches.

He is now set to face Austria’s Filip Misolic in the third round on Saturday, May 31 (Day 7) as he continues his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam title. Misolic defeated Denis Shapovalov of Canada in a hard-fought second-round battle to set up a clash against the legendary Djokovic for Round 3.

Despite the heavy loss, Moutet’s game was a testament to his growth and temperament, and his performance against the world no. 6 showcased his potential for prospects, earning him admiration from the home crowd.
