New Delhi: Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) stand-in skipper Riyan Parag has been handed a fine of Rs. 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during his team’s clash with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Guwahati on Sunday. RR beat CSK by a narrow margin of six runs to register their first win of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, but it came on a bittersweet note for Parag.
Batting first, RR posted 182/9 and wrapped CSK at 176/6 at their second home – the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, successfully ending the Guwahati leg as well. The IPL informed about Parag’s offence in a media release, which stated, “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Parag was fined INR 12 lakhs.”
For those unversed, the IPL changed its rule concerning the over rate offences, which previously resulted in a match ban for the captain if his team committed three over rate offences in a season. Things have changed from the ongoing season with the introduction of demerit points. Any player slapped with a fine for slow over rate will be given demerit points, which, upon accumulation to a certain point, could result in his match suspension.
RR’s road ahead
The Royals started their IPL 2025 campaign on a dull note with a loss at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The high-scoring encounter ultimately saw SRH winning the game by 44 runs. RR lost their second fixture to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before securing their first win of the season against CSK on Sunday. They are scheduled to face Punjab Kings (PBKS) next, in Mullanpur on April 5 followed by Gujarat Titans (GT) on April 9.
Riyan Parag led Rajasthan Royals to their first win of the IPL 2025 but it was on a bittersweet note for him. He was penalised for an offence committed during the RR vs CSK game on Sunday. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
