From legs impairment to bagging Paralympic gold, story of Harvinder Singh’s unwavering spirit

New Delhi: Harvinder Singh becomes the first Indian archer to win a gold medal at the Paralympics. He defeated Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek 6-0 in the men’s recurve open final. Earlier, He became the first Indian archer to enter the Paralympic finals by securing consecutive four wins in the men’s recurve open competition.

Harvinder defeated Iran’s Mohammad Reza Arab Ameri 7-3 in the semi-final. In the quarterfinals, Harvinder beat world number nine Hector Julio Ramirez by 6-2. He eliminated Tseng Lung-Hui of Chinese Taipei 7-3 in the round of 32 before overcoming an opening set deficit to beat Indonesia’s Setiawan Setiawan 6-2 in the last-16 round.

Harvinder’s inspiring journey

Harvinder Singh was born in Kaithal, Haryana and belongs to a farmer family. He faced a significant adversity at a very young age. He contracted Dengue when he was just one and a half years old and required injections. However, the side effects of those injections resulted in a loss of function in his legs.

Despite the early challenges in life, Harvinder found a passion for archery after getting inspiration from the London Paralympics in 2012. He made his debut at the 2017 Para Archery World Championship and finished seventh. In 2018, he won the gold medal in the Asian Para Games. During the lockdown, his father converted their farm into an archery range to support his training.

Alongside his success in archery, Harvinder is also pursuing a PhD in Economics from Punjab University, Patiala. He created history at the Tokyo Paralympics by winning a bronze medal which was India’s first archery medal. He scripted history again by becoming the first Indian archer to win a gold medal at the Paralympics.
