New Delhi: Foodies in Delhi-NCR, comprising Delhi, Noida and Gurugram do not prefer Western food or other cuisines, according to the NRAI India Food Services Report 2024. Overall, the frequency of people dining out rose to 7.9 times per month in FY24 from 6.6 times per month in FY19, according to the report. India’s top 9 cities contributed to 59 per cent of overall food services sector revenue, according to the NRAI report. NRAI is the acronym for the restaurant and dining industry body, the National Restaurant Association of India.

What foodies in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram prefer

Delhiites and Noida residents prefer Indian foods more than any other cuisines. Around 51 per cent of residents prefer eating these items in restaurants:

Pakoras
Chhole Bhature
Samosa
Kachori
Kebabs

Around 53 per cent of their fellow citizens in Gurugram prefer eating Chinese food, according to the report.

How Delhi dines

Valued at Rs 42,0002 crore Delhi-NCR forms the second largest organised food service sector market after Mumbai in India, according to NRAI. In a survey of 5,200 restaurants, NRAI found that 32 per cent of Delhiites had reported a rise in dining out since the pandemic. Segmentwise, here’s how Delhiites like to dine out:

30 per cent like fine dining
20 per cent like to dine at quick service restaurants (QSR outlets)
13 per cent prefer casual dining
11 per cent prefer food courts
9 per cent like sweets, ice cream and baked foods
Delhiites dine out 8.96 times per month.

Who spends most on food in Delhi-NCR

Since dining out has picked up post-COVID-19 pandemic, here’s how much residents in Delhi-NCR spend on each restaurant visit:

Foodies in Gurugram spend Rs 1,274 on average on every restaurant visit.
Delhiites spend Rs 11,65 per visit
Noida foodies pay just Rs 997 per visit

Among other trends, while fine dining is most prevalent in Delhi and Noida, in Gurugram quick service restaurants rule the popularity charts, according to the report.
