Understanding Platelets and PRP

Blood is composed of four primary components: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Platelets play a crucial role in the body’s healing process by promoting cell growth and tissue regeneration. In PRP therapy, these platelets are concentrated to about five times their usual level. This high concentration is significant because platelets secrete growth factors that are essential for wound healing and tissue regrowth.

The PRP process begins with a blood draw from the patient. This blood is then placed in a centrifuge, a machine that spins at high speeds to separate its components. After centrifuging, the plasma, which contains the platelets, rises to the top. The lower part of this plasma, rich in platelets, is collected for the treatment. Sometimes, a second centrifuge spin is performed to further increase the platelet concentration, ensuring maximum effectiveness.

PRP in Hair Restoration

The theory behind PRP for hair restoration is based on the ability of platelets to stimulate dermal papilla cells, which are crucial for hair growth. When PRP is injected into the scalp, it reaches the bottom of the hair follicles, potentially activating these cells and promoting hair regrowth.

A study investigating PRP as a treatment for male pattern hair loss involved 20 men who received PRP injections on half of their scalp and a placebo on the other half. The participants underwent three treatment sessions at 30-day intervals. The results, assessed by a blinded evaluator using computerized trichograms showed clinical improvement in hair regrowth, reduced hair dystrophy, and increased cell proliferation.

The standard PRP treatment plan for hair loss involves three initial sessions, spaced approximately one month apart, followed by maintenance sessions every three to six months. This regimen helps sustain the results and encourages continuous hair growth.

Most research on PRP for hair loss has focused on androgenetic alopecia. In men, this condition typically causes hair loss on the top and front of the head, while women often experience thinning on the top and crown, beginning with a widening center part. Studies suggest that PRP may be most effective when combined with other treatments for AGA, such as topical minoxidil (Rogaine) or oral finasteride (Propecia), an anti-androgenic drug.
