New Delhi: South Africa will face India in the big final of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados on June 29, Saturday. The Proteas have finally broken their semi-final curse and will play their first-ever final in the ICC mega event. They defeated Afghanistan in a one-sided match by nine wickets. Afghanistan also played their first-ever semi-final in the ICC event but were thrashed by South Africa’s lethal bowling attack, bowled out for just 56 runs, as the Aiden Markram-led side chased the target comfortably in under nine overs.
Aiden Markram has been sensational with his captaincy skills across this tournament. When South Africa was playing in the co-hosts USA’s conditions, where pacers were getting more help from the surface, they used four pacers in their playing XI. Similarly, when the Super Eight stage started and play shifted to West Indies, the condition changed to ball getting low and spinners performing well. Hence, they added their star chinaman Tabraiz Shamsi in the XI. Markram was superb with his changes in playing XI according to the conditions.
Aiden Markram’s unbeaten run in ICC events
South Africa’s T20 World Cup 2024 journey is commendable as they are on an eight-match winning streak and head to the final with a 100% win record in the tournament. Under the leadership of Markram, the Proteas have been undefeated since the Under-19 World Cup 2014. Markram was undefeated in the U-19 World Cup and became the first South African captain to lift any major trophy in cricket. Under his leadership, Proteas won six matches in that tournament with an unbeaten run.
Markram’s dream run in T20 leagues
Markram’s captaincy is not limited to national duties as he led Sunrisers Eastern Capetown to back-to-back titles in their domestic T20 league SA20. He was also a part of Sunrisers Hyderabad who recently played in the final of the Indian Premier League (2024). Markram is eager to take Proteas to their first senior ICC title and rewrite South African cricket history.
