New Delhi: It was an enthralling opening day at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Sunday as all franchises spent big money on marquee Indian names and top overseas players. Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant emerged as the most expensive buy in IPL auction history after being bought by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for a staggering Rs 27 crore.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) went all out to secure the services of Team India star Shreyas Iyer for Rs 26.75 crore. Iyer was released by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) despite leading them to a memorable title triumph in IPL 2024 earlier this year. PBKS beat Delhi Capitals in the race to sign Iyer making the most of their big purse at the auction.
PBKS also splurged big to rope in Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh and spinner Yuzvendra Chahal for Rs 18 crore each. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) broke the bank to buy back star all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer for Rs 23.75 crore, making him the 3rd most expensive pick on Day 1 of the auction. KL Rahul was sold to Delhi Capitals for Rs 14 crore.
Punjab Kings headed into the IPL 2025 mega auction with the highest purse of Rs 110.50 crore and they bought the most number of players – 10, on Day 1. Punjab Kings spent Rs 88 crore from their overall purse on Day 1 and will head into the second day of the auction with a remaining purse of Rs 22.50 crore. Only 3 teams used RTM options on Day 1 of the auction.
Delhi Capitals exercised RTM to keep Jake Fraser McGruk while Chennai Super Kings used their only RTM to get back Rachin Ravindra. Punjab Kings used the RTM to keep Arshdeep Singh for Rs 18 crore which was also the most expensive RTM used by any team in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
