New Delhi: Gautam Gambhir’s future as head coach of the Indian cricket team will most likely depend on the team’s performance at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, according to a report in PTI. The report also mentioned the alleged discontent in the dressing room due to Gambhir’s efforts to end the “superstar culture” in the team.
India’s results in international cricket have been dismal, to say the least since Gambhir took charge in July last year. Under his coaching, the Indian team has lost six out of 10 Tests and also a bilateral ODI series in Sri Lanka.
Gambhir’s position could become untenable if India doesn’t do well in CT
The shambolic show has also laid bare the frailties in the team including the playing spots of the veteran duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have come under heavy criticism for their poor form. Gambhir’s position has also come under scanner following reports of his rift with prominent players during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia which India lost 1-3.
“If India doesn’t do well in the Champions Trophy, the head coach’s position could become untenable. Yes, his contract runs till the 2027 World Cup but the process of evaluation continues.
“Sport is result-oriented and till now, Gambhir hasn’t given any tangible results,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
BCCI has already conducted a review of the team’s disastrous performance in Australia with team culture emerging as one of the hot topics of discussion.
Gambhir’s quest to end superstar culture
The source revealed that Gambhir wants to end the superstar culture and gave the example of his bold decision to Brendon McCullum from the playing XI for the IPL 2012 final against CSK during his captaincy tenure with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Gambhir’s efforts to change the team culture have caused discomfort for some playing members, added the source.
The report also revealed that Gambhir was not pleased with the specific demands of star players but lack of communication about the same led to the alleged rift.
With a marquee tournament like the Champions Trophy on the horizon, the Indian team management should focus on ironing out the issues to head into the tournament in the best possible shape.
