New Delhi: Australia’s chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that David Warner won’t be a part of the Australian squad that will travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Despite hanging his boots on all formats of the game, Warner had expressed his willingness to make a final appearance for Australia in the upcoming mega ODI event “if selected” but Bailey has crushed his hopes of one last dance.
“Our understanding is that David is retired, and (he) should be commended on what has been an incredible career across all three formats,” Bailey said during a media interaction. “You never know when Bull’s joking… think he’s just stirring the pot a bit.
“He’s had a wonderful career, can’t celebrate it enough, and think as time goes by, his legacy of what he has done for Australia and we reflect back on that, the legend of a player is only going to continue to grow. But as far as this team goes and the journey to transition to some different players, in his case across all three formats, it’s going to be exciting,” Bailey added.
What did Warner say?
The explosive opener made headlines when in a thankful Instagram post, he mentioned that he is open to a comeback if picked for the Champions Trophy. The post came after Australia’s exit from the T20 World Cup which was an official end to Warner’s international career. Warner wrote a long caption along with a snap of a newspaper whose headline read, “Never write off a houso kid.”
“I will continue to play franchise cricket for a while, and I am also open to playing for Australia in the Champions trophy if selected,” he had written. The southpaw had called time on his ODI career after Australia’s World Cup win last year and played his Test swansong earlier this year against Pakistan.
Warner featured in 383 matches for Australia across formats where he amassed 18,995 runs, lifting two ODI World Cups, a T20 World Cup title, and the elite World Test Championship (WTC) title during his stay with the national side.
In a recent Instagram post, David Warner had left the door ajar on his ODI retirement saying that he is willing to partake in Champions Trophy 2025 if he is selected. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
