There are a lot of things that we use every day that require non-renewable energy, like cars, home heating and cooling systems and stoves. Every year, each one of us uses about 78 million British Thermal Units (BTU) of energy which means that the global population uses more than 575 quadrillion BTU of energy every year.
Coal, oil and gas are some of the most common sources of energy that we depend on and they are known as fossil fuels. However, there will come a day when the Earth will run out of fossil fuel and also, and over the centuries, it has been the major contributor to air and water pollution, land degradation, and global warming. Hence, we have to move to non-renewable forms of energy like solar, wind, hydroelectric, nuclear, and geothermal.
Global Energy Independence Day encourages us to promote renewable energy sources and diversify our energy supply. Thanks to technological advancements, we have come up with sustainable energy solutions, enabling us to switch to cleaner and renewable energy systems. The day calls for us to push for meaningful change, and increase the pace to shift to renewable energy.
