Global Energy Independence Day: What is the significance of this day?

New Delhi: Every year on July 10, Global Energy Independence Day is celebrated worldwide to remind us about the need to reduce our dependency on non-renewable resources and move towards cleaner and more resilient energy systems. For the betterment of the environment and to reduce the threats of climate change and global warming, we have to promote clean, renewable energy sources. The day provides an important platform to learn more about renewable forms of energy, such as solar, wind, and geothermal.

Global Energy Independence Day: Know about it

Global Energy Independence Day was first observed in 2012 to raise awareness about the importance of renewable energy and reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. The day reminds us of our shared obligation to address the energy issue that the world is facing and make everyone move over to sustainable and clean energy sources.

There are a lot of things that we use every day that require non-renewable energy, like cars, home heating and cooling systems and stoves. Every year, each one of us uses about 78 million British Thermal Units (BTU) of energy which means that the global population uses more than 575 quadrillion BTU of energy every year.

Coal, oil and gas are some of the most common sources of energy that we depend on and they are known as fossil fuels. However, there will come a day when the Earth will run out of fossil fuel and also, and over the centuries, it has been the major contributor to air and water pollution, land degradation, and global warming. Hence, we have to move to non-renewable forms of energy like solar, wind, hydroelectric, nuclear, and geothermal.

Global Energy Independence Day encourages us to promote renewable energy sources and diversify our energy supply. Thanks to technological advancements, we have come up with sustainable energy solutions, enabling us to switch to cleaner and renewable energy systems. The day calls for us to push for meaningful change, and increase the pace to shift to renewable energy. Also, it aims to create a more sustainable energy supply line for the betterment of this planet, promote sustainable energy sources, call for change of policies regarding energy, and lead towards collaboration and action on this.
