New Delhi: In the light of renowned badminton coach Pullela Gopichand’s hard-headed comments, the Sports Ministry has come up with a new course to help elite athletes to become coaches, referees and technical experts and strengthen the sprots ecosystem of the country.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya spoke about the launch of the Special Capacity Building Course, which will focus on the ones who were primarily employed in public sector undertakings (PSUs) or central government under the sports quota. People in this category will be prioritised to become elite coach, as the minister cited the lack of top-class coaches in the country.
Mandaviya believes that the course will enable the former Indian sportsperson to shape themselves into the world of coaching. This won’t restrict them to coaching alone as they can further explore into other arenas such as officiating in matches (as referees) and also turn into technical officials. The ones eligible for the course will be trained by experts at the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports in Patiala.
This course is specialised for the current and former elite athletes who are employed under central government, autonomous organisations (under central government), or central public sector undertakings.
Any athlete who has participated at any multi-sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games or Olympics are eligible to be a part of this course. It is also open to medallists at the National Games, National Championships, Youth Olympics or World Championships.
The course is made up of four certification levels in foundation, primary, intermediate and advanced stages. The candidate has the flexibility to complete each level within a span of two years while holding his/her respective job.
One can take the six-week course of each level in either hybrid mode or completely offline mode (which is on the campus). The hybrid way involves two weeks of online learning and four weeks of physical appearance at the centre.
Modern coaching, sports science, yogasana, leadership are some of the qualities that will be focused in the course. It will be take in consideration to develop the aspirational coaches with wide range of skillset with the esteemed professionalism involved into it.
The Union sports minister also said that they will be further sending the deserving candidates abroad for international coaching courses.
The move from the Sports Ministry is apparently a big measure after former Indian badminton player Pullela Gopichand asked children not to pursue sports unless they belong to a rich family background. He also emphasised how top athletes with jobs also have to struggle and salute to bureaucrats.
