Grigor Dimitrov named replacement of Rafael Nadal for Team Europe in Laver Cup 2024

New Delhi: World No.10 Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria has been named replacement for Rafael Nadal in Team Europe for the Laver Cup 2024, the tournament organisers announced on Friday, September 13.

On Thursday, 24-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal pulled out of the Laver Cup after stating ‘that the best decision for Team Europe’ was taken considering it is a team event.

“I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week. This is a team competition and to really support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them and at this moment there are other players who can help the team deliver the win,” Nadal said in a statement.

Dimitrov reached the US Open quarterfinal last week before being forced to retire in the fourth set against home favourite Frances Tiafoe while the Bulgarian was trailing at 3-6, 7-6(5), 3-6, 1-4.

The official X handle of Laver Cup announced that Dimitrov will replace Nadal in the Laver Cup.

Who are other members of Team Europe in Laver Cup 2024?

In July, Norwegian tennis player Casper Ruud and Greek’s Stefanos Tsitsipas were named as the last two players in Team Europe for the seventh edition of the Laver Cup. Spain’s prodigious talent Carlos Alcaraz, who won French Open and Wimbledon, will be the star attraction for Team Europe.

World No.2 Alexander Zverev will enjoy the support of home crowd as the event is scheduled to take place in Berlin from September 20 to 22. Daniil Medvedev, the former World No.1, is the another member of the six-men Team Europe led by 11-time Grand Slam winner Bjorn Borg, who will stand as captain for the final time for Team Europe.

Team Europe will aim to reclaim the Laver Cup after losing to Team World in successive editions – London in 2022 and Vancouver in 2023.
