New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rubbished the reports about India pulling out of the Asia Cup 2025 later this year, in a bid to isolate Pakistan in international cricket amid ongoing tensions between the two countries. Reports went viral on Monday, May 19, claiming that India won’t play in the Asia Cup this year and that the BCCI has communicated the same to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), the organising body of the tournament.
Tensions dramatically escalated between India and Pakistan earlier this month after the Indian armed forces conducted Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure across Pakistan and the Pakistan-Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJ&K) in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. The hostilities ended after India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire on May 10.
However, the political tensions between the two countries have led to strong calls for a complete boycott of all cricketing ties with Pakistan. India and Pakistan have not played bilateral cricket against each other since 2013 due to political tensions between the two nations, but they continue to meet in major ICC competitions.
BCCI categorically denies reports of pulling out of Asia Cup 2025
As per a report in Cricbuzz, BCCI has categorically denied the reports of India pulling out of the Asia Cup 2025. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board has not even had discussions about the upcoming Asian events and has not written to the ACC about not participating in the Asia Cup 2025 or the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup this year.
“Since this morning, it has come to our notice about some news items about BCCI’s decision not to participate in Asia Cup and Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, both ACC’s events. Such news are devoid of any truth as till now BCCI has not even discussed or taken any such steps regarding the upcoming ACC events, leave alone writing anything to the ACC,” BCCI secretary Saikia was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
“At this stage, our prime focus is on the ongoing IPL and subsequent England series, both men and women,” he added.
