Mumbai: Today, Thursday, 27 March 2025, marks the observance of Guru Pradosh Vrat, a highly auspicious fast dedicated to Lord Shiva. Observed on the Trayodashi Tithi (13th lunar day) of both the Krishna and Shukla Paksha every month, Pradosh Vrat is considered spiritually rewarding for devotees seeking divine blessings, peace, and prosperity. As today’s vrat coincides with a Thursday, it is known as Guru Pradosh, aligning the energies of both Lord Shiva and the planet Jupiter (Guru), symbolising wisdom and spiritual elevation.
On this sacred day, devotees fast, chant mantras, and offer prayers to Lord Shiva during the Pradosh Kaal – the twilight period just after sunset – which is considered the most spiritually potent time for Shiva worship. Observing the vrat with devotion is believed to bring happiness, financial stability, and remove obstacles from life.
Pradosh Puja Muhurat
According to the Hindu Panchang, the Trayodashi Tithi began at 1:42 AM today and will end at 11:03 PM. The auspicious Pradosh Puja Muhurat is from 6:35 PM to 8:57 PM, during which devotees are encouraged to perform special rituals and prayers to Lord Shiva.
Pradosh Vrat Puja Vidhi
Devotees observing the vrat should wake up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes. After taking a vow to fast, the puja area should be cleansed and sanctified with Gangajal. A Shiva Linga should be placed in a vessel and bathed with Panchamrit – a mixture of milk, curd, honey, sugar, and ghee. Offerings of Bel leaves, Hibiscus (Gudhal), Aak, and Madar flowers should be made.
Devotees are also encouraged to offer kheer made with makhana and rice, chant Shiva mantras, recite Shiv Purana and the Shiv Tandav Stotram, and listen to the Pradosh Vrat Katha. Worship of Lord Shiva and his family in the evening, especially during Pradosh Kaal, is essential, followed by aarti to conclude the rituals.
What to Eat and Avoid During the Fast
Those observing a phalahar vrat (fruit-based fast) may consume items like bananas, apples, green gram, milk, curd, singhara halwa, sabudana khichdi, and kuttu puris. Dry fruits and coconut water are also permitted. Devotees must avoid onion, garlic, grains, red chilli, non-vegetarian food, and alcohol. Use of regular salt should be avoided – only rock salt is recommended.
