Gynaecological cancers: Oncologist lists the types, symptoms, treatment options

New Delhi: Gynecological cancers encompass a range of cancers that affect the female reproductive system, including the cervix, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina, and vulva. Each type of cancer arises from different cells within these organs and is classified based on location and tissue origin. And when it comes to cancer and its types, it is essential to detect the tumour timely to make way for treatment. A delay in detection or treatment can raise the risk of the disease spreading and becoming metastatic. Once metastatic, the disease can cause a great deal of damage and even irreversible.

Dr. Roopesh N, Lead Consultant -Gynecologic Onco-Surgeon, Peritoneal Oncology(HIPEC & PIPAC) Specialist, and gyne-laparoscopic Surgeon, SPARSH Hospital, Yelahanka, interacting with News9Live, spoke about the common types of gynecological cancers, their symptoms, and treatment options.

Most Common Types Of Gynecological Cancers

Common types of gynecological cancers include cervical cancer, primarily caused by persistent infection with high-risk strains of human papillomavirus (HPV); ovarian cancer, often diagnosed at an advanced stage due to subtle early symptoms; and uterine cancer (endometrial cancer), associated with hormonal imbalances, obesity, and excessive estrogen exposure.

Additional Horrors

Additional types include fallopian tube cancer, a rare form often diagnosed at an advanced stage, and vaginal cancer, more common in older women. Vulvar cancer affects the external genitalia and is linked to conditions like HPV infection and lichen sclerosis. At the same time, uterine sarcomas are cancer originating in the muscle of the uterus, posing diagnostic challenges due to varied presentations.

Signs To Look Out For

Common symptoms across these cancers include abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding, especially after sex, and postmenopausal bleeding, seen in cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and endometrial cancers. Other symptoms include bloating, abdominal pain, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, constipation, and changes in vulva skin or colour. Recognising these symptoms and seeking timely medical advice is crucial for early detection and treatment.
