Gynaecologist explains: How exercise can prevent ovarian cancer

New Delhi: Ovarian cancer is a malignant tumour that begins in the ovaries, female organs that produce eggs. This disease often goes undetected till it spreads to the stomach and the pelvis. Once it becomes metastatic, when it reaches the fourth and final stage, the disease is more difficult to treat and is potentially fatal as well. In the early stages, it often has no symptoms; and to make matters worse, the symptoms in its advanced stages are also not specific enough to be spotted timely. However according to doctors, regular workouts could go a long way in the prevention of the disease, which conventionally requires chemotherapy or surgery for treatment.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Ranjana Sinha Gynecologist And Obstetrician-Patna, Bihar, member of doctube, explained how regular workouts can help prevent ovarian cancer in the first place.

“Regular exercise plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of ovarian cancer, and Gen Z needs to integrate this habit into their lives. Ovarian cancer, though less common than other cancers, is a serious condition that can often be detected late. Fortunately, adopting a healthy lifestyle can be a proactive way to lower risk,” said Dr Sinha.

“Exercise helps regulate hormones, including estrogen, which has been linked to ovarian cancer when levels are too high. By maintaining a healthy weight and engaging in regular physical activity, you can help keep these hormone levels balanced. Moreover, exercise boosts your immune system and promotes overall health, which can contribute to cancer prevention,” the expert added.

For Gen Z, the digital age provides countless ways to stay active. Whether it’s through online workout classes, fitness apps, or virtual sports leagues, finding an activity that you enjoy is key. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, like brisk walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, such as running. Incorporate muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week.

Exercise isn’t just about physical health; it also reduces stress, improves mental well-being, and can help maintain a balanced lifestyle. Plus, establishing a regular exercise routine early in life sets the foundation for long-term health benefits. Incorporating regular physical activity into your daily routine can be a powerful tool in the fight against ovarian cancer. It’s a manageable and effective way to take control of your health and pave the way for a healthier future.
