Hansi Flick aiming to bring direct football to FC Barcelona instead of traditional tiki-taka

New Delhi: Hansi Flick took over from Xavi, who was fired a month after Barcelona persuaded him to stay on as their coach, despite his plans to depart at the season’s end. The 44-year-old had guided the team to the Champions League quarter-finals, where Paris Saint-Germain knocked them out. FC Barcelona appointed Hansi Flick on a two-year contract in May after the club’s president, Joan Laporta, took a U-turn decision on Xavi’s future.

Flick became a sensation when news broke out in 2016 regarding his contributions to Joachim Low’s management of the fierce German squad. After that, the German manager went on to become the head coach of Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, where he won the historic sextuple in his first season. He managed the German National Football Team soon after but failed to create a fruitful impact on the broken Deutschland side.

However, Hansi Flick has been vocal about his intentions to manage FC Barcelona one day, and he has the opportunity to get his managerial career back on track by ending Real Madrid’s dominance in European football. In a recent interview with Barca ONE, Hansi Flick acknowledged Barcelona’s traditional tiki-taka passing game but stressed his aim to introduce a more direct, goal-oriented strategy.

His goal is to turn around the club’s fortunes after a season without trophies. Flick’s appointment signals a shift towards a more aggressive, fast-paced attack, with emphasis on quick transitions and intense effort when not in possession. Barcelona fans are keenly awaiting this transformation, as the team had become rather predictable and dull under Xavi’s management. The German manager said: “I’m looking for the same thing, to press high up, and to play in the opponent’s midfield. But, at the end of the day, everything is about winning games.

He also added his idea of bringing an aggressive approach to the team. “Here the tradition is to play with passing, but I also want them to go straight to the goal,”.

FC Barcelona are known for their passing and possession-dominating style on the field, but a change seemed to be long overdue after the debatable performances over the past few seasons. It will be intriguing to see how Hansi Flick changes the tiki-taka setup in the club which has relied on the approach for decades.
