Harbhajan Singh recalls when calm and cool MS Dhoni lost his temper and punched…

New Delhi: Not many cricketers have the composure and calmness of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The iconic Indian cricketer gained a reputation as ‘Captain Cool’ owing to his calm demeanour on the field even in the toughest of situations.

Known for his ice-cool attitude, Dhoni was known to handle every situation calmly. Even when the going got tough, Dhoni always faced the situation wearing a non-worried look on his face.

While Dhoni’s incredible fame is largely due to his immense success as captain of India and of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the fact that he rarely seems to lose his temper on the field, made him a one-of-a-kind cricketer and earned him a ‘God-like’ status.

But there have been some instances of ‘Captain Cool’ losing his temper and having fiery moments amid the pressures involved in high-stakes international cricket and Indian Premier League (IPL).

Dhoni, whose IPL future hangs in the balance, rarely shows his emotions but displayed outbursts of emotions in the last match he played in the Yello jersey. Dhoni’s previous IPL appearance was a thrilling final group match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in IPL 2024.

When MS Dhoni lost his temper

RCB won a thriller to steal the final playoff spot at the expense of the five-time champions. As RCB players celebrated wildly after the last ball, Dhoni was seen storming back to the dressing room without shaking hands with the opposition players due to the extended celebration of the RCB players.

More details have emerged of the infamous incident that dominated the headlines the next morning with Harbhajan Singh Harbhajan Singh, Dhoni’s former India and CSK teammate revealing the insider information during a chat show on Sports Yaari.

Harbhajan, who was in the commentary box for that match said that Dhoni had punched a screen on his way to the dressing room.

“I was watching from upstairs and saw that they were celebrating, (CSK) had formed up in a line to shake hands with them. It took them a little while and by the time RCB were done with their celebration (Dhoni) went back inside and he punched a screen that comes before you reach the dressing room. It’s ok; this happens in sports.”, he said.

RCB staged a remarkable turnaround, winning their previous five games after losing six games on the trot, to give themselves an outside chance to qualify for the playoffs. After posting 218/5 batting first, RCB managed to restrict CSK to 191/7 – nine runs short of the 200 target CSK needed to qualify for the playoffs due to their superior net run rate. The Challengers reached the playoffs despite being rooted at the bottom of the table halfway through the league stage.
