Harmanpreet costliest pick at HIL 2024 auction: Full list of players sold on Day 1

New Delhi: Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh emerged as the most expensive pick on Day 1 of the Hockey India League (HIL) 2024 auction in Delhi on Sunday, October 13. Harmanpreet was sold to Soorma Hockey Club (Punjab) for a sum of Rs 78 lakh. The Hockey India League is all set to return this year after a hiatus of 7 years.

The last edition of the league took place in 2014 following which it was disbanded due to financial issues and scheduling problems. The HIL is set to make a grand comeback with the men’s and women’s tournaments taking place simultaneously this year. The men’s league will consist of 8 teams while 6 teams will take part in the women’s tournament.

Only male players went under the hammer on Day 1 of the HIL 2024 auction with all eight teams splurging big to build the core of their respective squads. Several big names from the Indian men’s hockey team went under the hammer on Day 1 and the franchises were involved in a bidding war for them.

While star drag-flicker Harmanpreet became the most expensive player on Day 1 after being sold for Rs 78 lakh to the Soorma Hockey Club, Indian forward Abhishek became the second-most expensive buy on Day 1 of the auction after being sold to Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers for Rs 72 lakh. Indian midfielder Hardik Singh became the third-most expensive buy after UP Rudras roped him for Rs 70 lakh.

Indian defender Amit Rohidas was among the other big Indian names sold at the auction on Day 1. He was bought by Tamil Nadu Dragons for Rs 48 lakh. Meanwhile, the Bengal Tigers secured the signing for Jugraj Singh for the same amount. Indian midfielder Sumit Walmiki was bought by Hyderbad Toofans for Rs 46 lakh.

Gonzalo Peillat most expensive overseas player

German defender Gonzalo Peillat emerged as the most expensive buy among the overseas players on Day 1 of the HIL 2024 auction. He was sold to Hyderabad Toofans for a sum of Rs 68 lakh. Netherlands defender Jip Janssen became the second-most expensive player after being bought by Tamil Nadu Dragons for Rs 54 lakh.

A total of 54 players were sold on Day 1 of the Hockey India League on Sunday. The 8 men’s franchises still have a total of 138 slots to fill on Day 2 of the HIL auction. Each men’s franchise has a purse of Rs 4 crore at the auction.
