‘He will step down if…’: Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma’s future in Test Cricket

New Delhi: Team India captain Rohit Sharma’s struggle to score runs has continued in Australia. He has batted in the middle order so far in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy after joining the team from the second Test. KL Rahul opened the batting for the Men in Blue in his place and has rediscovered his form.

Rohit has been struggling to score runs since the Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand at home. He has scored just 42 runs in four innings against Bangladesh and 91 runs in six innings against New Zealand. In the ongoing five-match Test series against Australia, he has scored 3,6 and 10 runs so far.

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on ABC Sport said that Rohit will get the opportunity to play in the next two test matches but if he doesn’t score runs he himself will take the call.

“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call” Sunil Gavaskar said on ABC Sport.

Gavaskar further added that Rohit will not want to be a burden on the team as he cares very deeply for Indian cricket and so if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of matches he himself will step down.

“He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team. He’s a cricketer who cares very deeply for Indian cricket” Gavaskar added.

‘Rohit put himself in self-doubt by not opening the innings’: Cheteshwar Pujara

India’s Test specialist batter Cheteshwar Pujara said that Rohit has put himself in self-doubt by not opening the innings. He further added that Rohit is used to opening the innings and when he has to wait for his turn he puts himself in doubt.

“He has been opening the innings, now he’s batting at number 6 in Australia. That is for the team, but i still feel that when you are so much used to opening the innings and when you have to wait, then you put yourself in that doubt. I mean, it doesn’t help you when you’re opening the innings and you suddenly start batting at number 6” said Pujara while taking to Star Sports.
