New Delhi: Australia skipper Pat Cummins didn’t feel the need to intervene when team-mate Travis Hed and India pacer Mohammed Siraj exchanged verbal volleys during the day-night Test at Adelaide.
Head was given a send-off by Siraj after castling him, leading to an angry exchange of words between them. Head was dismissed 140 rubs from 141 balls to snatch the game as Australia won the pink ball Test by 10 wickets to square the five-match series 1-1.
Head had later said that he had only said “well bowled” to Siraj and the send-off was uncalled for. It was dismissed by Siraj as a “lie”.
They were seen exchanging words on Sunday when Siraj came out to bat in India’s second innings on Sunday. Cummins said that two were big boys who could handle matters on their home and doesn’t need to be guided.
“Travis Head is vice-captain of the team, so he’s a big boy. He can talk for himself,” Cummins said fter Australia’s win.
“As a general rule, you normally let the boys be themselves. If you ever need to step in to intervene as captain, I would, but as I said, for our group, I’ve never really felt like I’ve needed to do that.
“It’s a big series so there’s a lot riding on it. The umpire stepped in pretty quickly, and that was the end of it,” he added.
“To be honest, they can do whatever they want. I’m more worried about our boys. Like always, I thought our boys’ behaviour was excellent this week, like it seems to be every week.”
‘Head super impressive’
Head’s swashbuckling innings earned him the man of the match, also getting him praise from Cummins, who was amazed at his ability to counter pressure with pressure.
“When Trav walked out to the crease yesterday, that was a turning point. Every time he walks out, the game’s kind of in the balance, can go one of two ways and within the space of a session or so, he really took the game out of their hands,” the pacer said.
“He just puts the pressure right back on to the opposition, hits into weird areas. Whenever he feels like there’s a small opportunity, he’ll up the ante and take the game away from the opposition. So, amazing. He’s done it time and again for us in many different formats, he’s super impressive.”
