Heartbreak for Abhimanyu Easwaran as ROI opener misses out on sensational double-ton

New Delhi: Abhimanyu Easwaran was the man toiling out in the field for Rest of India (RoI) in the Irani Cup 2024. The ROI opener was at his absolute best while leading the charge for the team in response to the monumental 537 set by Mumbai in the first innings riding on the stellar knock of Sarfaraz Khan (222*).

Easwaran displayed gutsy approach while tackling the movement of Mumbai pacers Mohit Avasthi and M Juned Khan. He was apt with his timing, driving past the covers and the sweeps were activated the moment the ball was spun by Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian.

It was his dogged resistance that kept ROI in the hunt for a substantial lead in the first innings at the stumps of Day 3. The 165-run stand with wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel was a high-promising tip for ROI innings to flourish. The alliance was separated with Dhruv Jurel’s removal.

Jurel attempted to play a sweep off a Shams Mulani round-the-wicket-angling delivery, resulting in brushing off the gloves before Hardik Tamore caught it low behind the stumps despite some distractions from Jurel. The Uttar Pradesh player missed the chance to score a well-deserved hundred because he didn’t embrace patience.

In the following over bowled by Mulani, Easwaran miscued a sweep as the ball kissed the top edge of the bat before landing the hands of Tanush Kotian at the short fine leg. That one false shot not only crushed Easwaran’s opportunity to score a double-hundred but also paved the way for Mumbai to dictate terms. The ROI vice-captain was frustrated with the choice of shot, one could sense with his gesture of slapping the bat on the ground before walking back in dismay. He was dismissed on 191.

ROI innings fold up for 416

Easwaran and Jurel’s dismissals led the way for RoI’s batting collapse as the last four batters added just 20 runs with Mulani and Kotian pulling back things for the reigning Ranji champions. The 121-run lead in the first innings has all but confirmed Mumbai’s chances to lift the Irani Cup, though miracles can never be ruled out in a game which loves more twists and turns.
