Heatwave: How much amount of sunscreen is safe for the skin? Dermatologist weighs in

New Delhi: Heatwave is one of the major threats that most of the states in India is experiencing currently. The temperature is soaring outside and at same time people also have to manage the heat and their daily routine. Amid this, maintaining a balanced lifestyle, keeping the body and skin healthy is very important. Here comes the role of sunscreen. It is one of the most crucial things during summers, but most people don’t know how much amount of sunscreen they should use on a daily basis to have a healthy skin.

Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics told News9, “Using sunscreen is mandatory for everyone as it not only protects your skin from harmful UV rays but also delays premature ageing. Daily application of sunscreen helps to deal with wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots caused by sun exposure.”

Sunscreen is also known to prevent skin cancer, and hyperpigmentation and maintain an even skin tone. It works wonders against environmental aggressors such as pollution and free radicals that cause dullness and damage to the skin.

As per Dr Kapoor, “It is essential to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of over SPF 50. However, there is also a doubt regarding how much amount of sunscreen one should use for full coverage. Currently, considering the entire country is experiencing heat waves, it is essential to protect the skin with the use of sunscreen. The expert further helps to understand how much amount of sunscreen is right for you.”

How much sunscreen is safe for you?

A short glass of sunscreen (one ounce) is enough daily to cover the entire body- including the face, neck, hands, and feet during heat weave. Remember, the amount can differ based on one’s body size.

Dr Kapoor said, “Using a smaller amount of sunscreen will not be sufficient for you and won’t provide any protection from the sun. However, it will be a good idea to confirm with the doctor regarding the right quantity of sunscreen for you. Also make sure to reapply after every 3 hours, even indoors.”

Moreover, investing in a doctor-recommended sunscreen can help you to ensure you get optimum results. “Be cautious while choosing a sunscreen and look for Non-Comedogenic products containing ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, formulated with anti-inflammatory and soothing ingredients that prevent irritation and burning of the skin. The sunscreen should offer protection without blocking your pores,”added Dr Kapoor.

So, don’t miss including sunscreen in your skincare regimen.
