New Delhi: Heinrich Klaasen went berserk as he smashed the joint third-fastest century in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to help Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) post a huge total of 278/3, the third-highest total of all time in the tournament, in his side’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday. Klaasen notched up his ton off just 37 balls en route to his sensational knock of an unbeaten 105 off 39 balls.

After a thunderous start from openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who added 94 runs for the first wicket, Klaasen came out all guns blazing at number 3 and helped SRH continue their momentum with a blazing knock. The South African batter’s 105 was laced with nine sixes and seven fours as he decimated the KKR bowling attack.

Head began the onslaught in the Powerplay as he went after the KKR bowlers from the word go and ended up with 76 off 40 balls, studded with six sixes and as many fours. However, Klaasen stole the show at the Arun Jaitley Stadium with a proper demolition job against a hapless KKR bowling attack. The South African went hammer and tongs as he notched up his fifty off just 18 balls before racing to his ton in the next 19 deliveries.

With his 27-ball century, Klaasen equalled Yusuf Pathan to become the third-fastest centurion in the IPL. He came close to surpassing Rajasthan Royals’ 14-year-old sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who smashed the second-fastest ton in the IPL off just 35 balls earlier this season, but failed to do so. Chris Gayle continues to hold the record for the fastest century in the IPL for his 30-ball ton against Pune Warriors India in IPL 2013.

Fastest centuries in IPL history:

Chris Gayle – 30 balls

Vaibhav Suryavanshi – 35 balls

Yusuf Pathan – 37 balls

Heinrich Klaasen – 37 balls
