New Delhi: Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of Team India after the departure of Rahul Dravid under whose leadership India recently lifted the T20 World Cup 2024. Gambhir’s appointment was indeed a grand affair with reports running rife for nearly two months, dishing upon the speculations. BCCI secretary Jay Shah on July 9, finally announced the ex-cricketer as the Men in Blue’s new head coach.
Gambhir’s tenure begins with a limited-overs series against Sri Lanka that starts on July 26, comprising three T20Is and ODIs alike. Gambhir is known for his aggressive mindset and will be met with a similar kind of schedule as well. Under his leadership, India is slated to participate in five ICC tournaments over the next three years – the Champions Trophy in 2025, followed by the World Test Championship final in the same year if India qualify. The team will also play the T20 World Cup in 2026 and the ODI World Cup in 2027, with another potential World Test Championship final in the same year.
Gambhir’s appointment has finally cleared the air and has put all the speculations to rest. Reports have it that Gambhir will be receiving a handsome amount from the BCCI as Team India’s head coach annually. Moreover, he will also be enjoying the additional perks and benefits granted to him, considering the seniority of the role.

While exact figures have not been confirmed, sources suggest his earnings will meet closely with Rahul Dravid’s previous compensation. According to reports from Times Now, Gambhir is expected to draw approximately Rs 12 crore annually from the BCCI.
“The day Ravi (Shastri) joined, he didn’t even have a contract and things worked out. In the case of Gautam also, some finer details are being worked out. The salary will be in the same range as Rahul Dravid,” a BCCI source had earlier told PTI.
In addition to his earnings, Gambhir will also be subjected to a daily allowance of Rs 21,000 during international tours, as per a report in The Economic Times.
