New Delhi: Hockey India (HI) has raised concerns over umpiring standards in the ongoing Paris Olympics after India edged past Great Britain in the quarterfinal on Sunday (August 4). Inconsistent video reviews, coaching during the penalty shootout, and use of video tablet by opposition goalkeeper are the major reasons stressed by India’s national federation of the sport.
In the 17th minute of the second quarter of the quarterfinal clash, Indian defender Amit Rohidas was shown red card for ‘deliberate’ challenge with the stick on Great Britain forward William Calnan. India played with just 10 men on the pitch for more than two quarters but managed to hold the opposition at 1-1 after the final whistle.
Though India outsmarted Great Britain 4-2 in the penalty shootout to advance to the semifinal stage, Hockey India has raised a series of concerns after what fold up in the first quarterfinal match of men’s hockey.
Apart from Amit Rohidas’ red card, the national federation also pointed out that Great Britain goalkeeper Ollie Payne was coached from behind the goalpost, and Payne used a video tablet, both, during the shootout. These are the ‘inconsistencies in officiating’ raised by Hockey India.
“These incidents have undermined confidence in the officiating process among players, coaches, and fans. Hockey India calls for a thorough review of these matters to uphold the integrity of the sport and ensure fair play in future matches,” HI stated in an official release.
Who will India face in semifinal?
India have made successive appearance at the Olympics. After winning a bronze medal at Tokyo with a thrilling win over Germany to end a 41-year-long wait for a podium finish, the expectations weren’t the same as the Men in Blue endured tough time on the pitch in the build up to the quadrennial showpiece.
India will face either Germany or Argentina in the semifinal on Tuesday (August 6).
