New Delhi: Home-favourite Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the upcoming Madrid Open because of leg injuries sustained. The Spanish sensation, ranked third, issued a statement where he said that he has not fully recovered from the upper leg ailment that troubled him during the Barcelona Open final on last Sunday.

Alcaraz has also sustained an injury on the left leg and with his first appearance at the Caja Magica in the Spanish capital scheduled for Saturday, his participation is in doubt. Alcaraz happens to be a two-time champion in Madrid, having clinched the tournament in 2022 and 2023. The Spanish sensation was the second seed this week and the was placed in the same half of the draw as Serbian giant Novak Djokovic.

Alcaraz’s straight sets loss in Barcelona final

Alcaraz was in need for treatment in his leg during his straight set loss to Holger Rune in the Barcelona final and because of this, he did not practice in Madrid. He further said that he felt fine in the week but was waiting for the medical test results which would decided his fate for the tournament, whether he would play or not.

The Spanish tennis player, who won in Monte Carlo to begin his clay-court campaign, possessed a nine-match winning run until the Barcelona final. Alcaraz also complained of having so many matches to play with just a few days to rest. Alcaraz has though affirmed that his injuries should be fine by next month ahead of the French Open. At the Roland Garros, Alcaraz is the defending champion after winning the final match in 2024 against Alexander Zverev.

The four-time Grand Slam champion has a 24-5 record in this year and in addition to the Monte Carlo, he also won in Rotterdam on hard court in February.
