The novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky follows the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov. He is a financially struggling former student in Saint Petersburg who is planning to kill an old woman. The target is an unscrupulous pawnbroker who has valuable objects including money in her flat. Rodion thinks that he could liberate himself from poverty with the money and go on to perform great deeds.

It is the third of the four crime novels that Arthur Conan Doyle had written featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. The story is set largely in Dartmoor, Devon, in England’s West Country. The plot follows Holmes and his friend Watson investigating the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Since his apparent death in “The Final Problem”, this was the first appearance of Holmes.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a detective novel by the British writer Agatha Christie. It is her third work to feature Hercule Poirot as the lead detective. The novel was published in the UK in June 1926. The novel was well-received from its first publication and has been called Christie’s masterpiece. It follows the death of Roger Ackroyd, a wealthy widower and owner of Fernly Park and Poirot’s investigation to find out who killed him.

Authored by Stephen King, it is a 1977 horror novel and its success firmly established him as a preeminent author in the horror genre. The setting and characters are influenced by King’s personal experiences. The novel was adapted into a famous 1980 film and a 1997 miniseries. The story follows Jack Torrance, a struggling writer who becomes the off-season caretaker of the historic Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies and takes his family with him. Notably, his young son Danny has an array of psychic abilities.
