How have India fared at the Olympics over the years?

New Delhi: India missed out on a chance to equal their best-ever tally at the Paris Olympics 2024 as the contingent finished with six medals, including a solitary silver. India finished 48th at the last edition of the Games in Tokyo but are set to finish 70th in the Paris Olympics medals table in what has been a disappointing campaign. Neeraj Chopra won India’s only silver medal at the Paris Games.

Manu Bhaker finished the Paris Olympics 2024 as India’s most successful athlete with two bronze medals to her name. She opened India’s tally at the Games with a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event before bagging another bronze medal with her partner Sarabjot Singh in the mixed team 10m air pistol event.

Manu’s double-medal feat saw her become the first Indian woman to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics. She also became the first athlete post-independence to win two medals in the same edition of the showpiece event. Swapnil Kusale picked up India’s third medal in shooting in Paris followed by the Indian hockey team’s bronze medal triumph.

Indian men’s hockey team defeated Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal match to win their second Olympic bronze medal in a row. Neeraj finished second on the podium in the men’s javelin throw final to clinch the silver medal. He became India’s most successful Olympian of all time with a gold and a silver medal in consecutive editions.

Wrestler Aman Sehrawat clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 57kg freestyle category to add the sixth medal to India’s tally at the Paris Olympics 2024. It was India’s 3rd-best performance at an Olympics despite them managing the same number of medals won at the London Olympics in 2012. However, India won a total of 2 silver and 4 bronze medals in 2012 while the country managed only 1 silver medal and 5 bronze medals in Paris 2024.

India’s 7-medal haul at the Tokyo Games remains their best-ever performance at an Olympics. India won a total of 4 bronze medals, 2 silver and 1 gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics with Neeraj scripting history by becoming the first-ever Indian to win a gold medal in athletics.
