Sheikh Hints At US Role Over Her Ouster From Bangladesh, Says ‘Had I Left Bay of Bengal…’

New Delhi: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently seeking refuge in India, has publicly accused foreign powers, including the US, of being involved in her removal. This statement follows the Indian government’s recent announcement that it is investigating the potential involvement of external forces in Bangladesh‘s political crisis.

US Wanted Control Over Bay of Bengal

“I could have remained in power if I had left St. Martin and the Bay of Bengal to America,” she said in a message conveyed to her Awami League supporters.

Hasina further claimed that “a white man” had proposed a smooth return to power in exchange for granting access to an airbase. She also mentioned that her exit from Dhaka was taken into consideration as a lot of people were getting killed.

“I resigned so that I did not have to see the procession of dead bodies. They wanted to come to power over your (students’) bodies, but I did not allow it. I came with power,” read Hasina’s statement.

“Maybe if I was in the country today, more lives would have been lost, more wealth would have been destroyed,” she added.

Hasina Vows To Return Soon

“I will return soon inshallah.  The defeat is mine but the victory is [that of] the people of Bangladesh,” she told the workers of the Awami League.

“I removed myself, I came with your victory, you were my strength, you did not want me, I myself then left, resigned. My workers who are there, no one will lose morale. Awami League has stood up again and again,” she added.

Earlier Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh‘s interim government on August 8 night, three days after Sheikh Hasina resigned from the position of Prime Minister and left the country amid widespread unrest.

Seventeen members of Bangladesh‘s interim government took their oath at a ceremony in Dhaka on Thursday, Bangladesh-based daily, Dhaka Tribune reported. Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus, 84, was sworn in as the country’s chief advisor.

The members of the interim government are – Muhammad Yunus, Salehuddin Ahmed, Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, Md Nazrul Islam (Asif Nazrul), Adilur Rahman Khan, AF Hassan Ariff, Md Touhid Hossain, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Supradip Chakma, Farida Akhter, Bidhan Ranjan Roy, Sharmeen Murshid, AFM Khalid Hossain, Farooq-e-Azam, Nurjahan Begum, Nahid Islam, and Asif Mahmud, as reported by Dhaka Tribune.

Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation with Sheikh Hasina, tendering her resignation from her post on August 5 in the wake of mounting protests. The protests, led majorly by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs, took the shape of anti-government protests.
