New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) witnessed a significant rise in their earnings from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 compared to the amount they generated from the 2022 season. BCCI earned more than Rs 5000 crore from IPL 2023, thanks to the new media rights deal that kicked in from 2023.

As per a report in the Economic Times, BCCI’s annual report for 2022-23 showed that the Indian cricket board earned a surplus of Rs 5,120 crore from the IPL 2023 season. The board witnessed a 116% rise in the surplus from Rs 2,367 crore in the 2022 season. IPL’s new media rights deal and the new sponsorship deals ahead of the 2023 season were the reason behind the rise in BCCI’s revenue from the tournament.

How much did BCCI earn from IPL 2023 in total?

The BCCI earned a total income of Rs 11,769 crore from the IPL 2023 season. The board had sold IPL media rights for the five-year cycle from 2023 to 2027 for a whopping Rs 48,390 crore and the deal kicked in last year which resulted in a significant increase in BCCI’s earnings. Disney Star bagged the IPL TV rights for the 2023-27 cycle for Rs 23,575 crore while Viacom-18 won the digital media rights with a bid of Rs 23,758 crore.

Besides the media rights deal, BCCI also signed new sponsorship deals which played a role in increasing their earnings from IPL 2023. The Indian cricket board sold IPL title sponsorship to Tata for Rs 2,500 crore for the next five years while raking in Rs 1485 crore from signing deals for associate sponsorships with the likes of MyCircle11, RuPay, AngelOne, and Ceat.

The board earned Rs 8,744 crore alone from the media rights deal in IPL 2023 while the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) also generated an income of Rs 377 crore for the board. However, BCCI’s expenditure also increased by up to 66% to 6,648 crore during IPL 2023.

The richest cricket board in the world, BCCI paid a whopping Rs 4,670 crore to the IPL franchises from the central pool in IPL 2023 compared to the Rs 2,205 crore it paid to the teams in the 2022 season. As per the report, BCCI also paid GST of Rs 2,038 crore during financial years 2023 and 2024.

The Indian Premier League is the best T20 league in the world at present and has witnessed stunning growth over the years. IPL’s current media rights deal also puts the tournament in one of the richest in the world. The BCCI is expected to further increase their earning in the upcoming season considering the growing popularity of the league and rising fee for media rights.
