New Delhi: Aryna Sabalenka successfully put an end to her US Open hoodoo as she defeated USA’s Jessica Pegula in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 in a hard-fought women’s singles final battle at the Flushing Meadows’ Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Saturday. She finally got her hands on the US Open silverware, having lost in the finals last year to Coco Gauff and knocked out in the semifinal two years ago.
This is the third Grand Slam win of her career and a maiden US Open title which got her quite emotional. The triumph is also her second Grand Slam win of the year, having won the Australian Open in 2024. She claimed the elite Australian title last year as well. She expressed her pleasure after winning the title for the first time, highlighting that it was her dream and now that she has finally achieved it, she is proud of herself.
In her address to the media after the final, the 26-year-old dedicated her win to her family saying that ever since the death of her father, her only goal has been to put her family name ahead in tennis and the title-triumph in America is another step in that direction.
“After I lost my father, it has always been my goal to put our family name in the history of tennis. Every time I see my name on that trophy, I’m so proud of myself, I’m proud of my family that they never gave up on my dream and that they were doing everything they could to keep me going. I had this opportunity in life so it really means a lot. It has always been my dream,” the Belarusian said.
