Hyderabad: A massive fire broke out on the ground floor of a four-storey building in Jiyaguda, Kulsumpura area of Old city on late Tuesday, killing a 10-year-old child and her father.
The fire broke out at around 1 am at a sofa manufacturing unit and quickly spread to other floors, trapping residents in their flats, reports said.
At least 25 people trapped in the building were rescued by firefighters. The fire, believed to be caused by an electric short circuit, occurred in an apartment across from Gopi Hotel in Jiyaguda.
The presence of a furniture manufacturing warehouse in the apartment exacerbated the severity of the fire. Four fire engines were deployed to combat the blaze, which has yet to be brought under control.
The family involved in the accident is that of Srinivas, who works in the sofa manufacturing warehouse. Srinivas lived in a room in the same building with his wife and two children. The owner of the building stored sofa manufacturing materials in Srinivas’s room. During the fire, the sofa materials in the room prevented Srinivas’s family from escaping. They were injured by the time locals rescued them.
Succumbed to injuries:
The 10-year-old child Shiva Priya and her father Srinivas, 37, succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at Osmania General hospital. His wife Nagamani, 35, and their daughter Harini, 6, were seriously injured and are in critical condition at the hospital.
Four others Madhavi, 24, Lakshmi Bai, 70, and Meghna, 18, sustained burn injuries and were admitted to the hospital.
According to the police, the reason of the fire is being investigated by the forensic team. A case has been registered, further Investigation underway.
