New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has been in search for a new independent woman director after Indra Nooyi reportedly ended her association with the global governing body of cricket last month. The Chennai-born American businesswoman was appointed by the ICC in 2018 under former chairman Shashank Manohar.
The ICC constitution permits an independent woman director to serve three terms of two years, which means Nooyi’s tenure was about to end in July 2024.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Nooyi completed her term during ICC’s annual conference in Colombo last month. The 68-year-old attended the meeting virtually and thanked the global body for the opportunity. The ICC is on the lookout for Nooyi’s replacement and the report suggests that an Australian candidate is likely to fill the shoes.
The ICC is now left with 16 members in their Board of Directors panel after Nooyi’s exit as women director. The panel consists of 12 full members, three Associate Nation directors and the chairman. With New Zealand’s Greg Barclay, the current ICC chairman, has confirmed of stepping down from the position after the completion of his tenure in November this year.
Reports have suggested that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah will run for the ICC chair post. In case there will be elections, the 17-member Board of Directors panel will vote for the future chairman with nine votes making the absolute mandate.
“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new chair commencing on 1 December 2024,” the ICC said in a media release.
Who is Indra Nooyi?
Indra Nooyi was born in Chennai (then known as Madras) on October 28, 1955. She has many significant qualifications in the field of education with B.S. from Madras Christian College, an M.B.A. from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Calcutta, and a Master of Public and Private Management from Yale University.
In her 49 years of illustrious career, Nooyi’s longest stint was with Pepsico for 24 years. She served as the American multinational brand’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from 2006 to 2019. She is considered to be instrumental in doubling the company’s sales apart from introducing healthier products. Nooyi retired in 2019.
According to Forbes, the Indian origin of America joined the board of Amazon in 2019 and the global advisory board of Deutsche Bank in 2022. She also joined the newly formed CEO Advisory Council of AI-powered data security and management startup Cohesity in 2023.
