New Delhi: World no.2 Iga Swiatek extended solidarity with the victims of the Los Angeles (LA) wildfires with a heartwarming gesture after her victory against Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova in the Australian Open 2025 on Monday. Swiatek progressed to the second round with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Siniakova at the John Cain Arena.
The Pole looked in control right from the start of her clash against Siniakova and got the better of her Czech opponent comfortably in straight sets. Swiatek broke Siniakova twice in the first set to go 5-3 up before taking the set 6-3. She broke the Czech again at the start of the second set but Siniakova fought back. However, Swiatek prevailed in the end to clinch the set 6-4 and secure a thumping win.
The five-time Grand Slam champion came up with a great gesture for the victims of the LA wildfires after her first-round victory. Swiatek headed to the camera after the conclusion of her match and signed a heartfelt message of solidarity for the victims. “Sending my heart to Malibu and LA,” Swiatek wrote on the camera screen with a heart emoji. Her gesture was lauded by many on social media.

The wildfires in Los Angeles have ravaged the city over the last few days, leaving at least 24 dead and thousands of houses and other properties destroyed. Thousands are believed to be displaced and rescue operations are currently underway to help those stuck. People have been facing continuous power outages and other issues due to the wildfires.
