New Delhi: Heartbroken from a dramatic title collapse, Ajax manager Francesco Farioli resigned from his post a day after losing the Eredivisie title to PSV Eindhoven. While Farioli, in his parting statement, cited the reason for his departure as a difference in “vision” and “timeframes” for the club’s goals, it is believed that the trauma and heartbreak from the record title collapse were too big to recover from.
A report in ESPN, which quoted a source, also stated that there was a difference in opinion behind the scenes over contract extensions and recruitment strategy.
Having joined the Dutch club in June 2024 from Nice, Farioli was on course for a dream start in the Dutch league, but the European giants, remarkably, blew up a nine-point lead with just five matches left.
Farioli’s contract was supposed to run through 2027, but the Italian has departed after just one season at the club, mainly because of the agonising title miss. Farioli was in tears on Sunday and walked around the Johan Cruyff Arena in an emotional state after Ajax’s 2-0 win over FC Twente. He also refused to comment on his future post-match.

A dramatic title collapse
Despite a late charge by PSV, Ajax were masters of their own destiny until last week when they dropped two points against Groningen. Knowing that a win would keep them in pole position on the final matchday, Ajax failed to kill off the match and conceded a 99th-minute equaliser. The slip in the penultimate game of the season allowed PSV Eindhoven to take the lead in the title race, and they eventually won a heart-stopping title race by a point on Sunday.
Former Ajax and Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has emerged as a front-runner to replace the Italian, who himself wouldn’t be short of potential suitors, having established his reputation as one of the best young coaches in Europe.
