IND vs BAN: India aiming to continue 41-year streak in Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium

Kanpur: India will be gunning for a series whitewash when they take on Bangladesh in the second and final Test of the series at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. Rohit Sharma’s men outclassed the visitors in all three departments at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai to go 1-0 up in the series and a win in Kanpur would extend their home dominance to 18 successive series wins.

Unlike the red-soil pitch in Chennai, which offered plenty of help for the seamers, the Green Park Stadium curators are expected to roll out a black soil pitch which will assist the slow bowlers due to the low bounce on offer.

The different conditions are likely to force both teams to make changes to their playing XIs and pick a spin-heavy combination.

History of Green Park Stadium

Green Park is an iconic stadium and one of the oldest venues in the country. It played host as one of the venues for England’s tour of India in 1951-52 – the first time since the country gained independence from the British Raj in 1951/52. India lost their first two games at this venue, the second loss coming against the West Indies in December 1958 by 203 runs. India first tasted win at Green Park in 1959, when they beat Australia by 119 runs.

After the win against Australia, India played seven successive draws at this venue across 19 years and the dull nature of the pitch meant that Kanpur got less and less opportunities to host Tests.

India hold a strong record at this venue five of the seven Tests held at the Green Park since 1996.

The last two Tests at this venue were staged in 2021 and 2016, both against New Zealand with the last one four years ago ending in a draw.

India aiming to continue a 41-year streak

India have not lost at this venue in 41 years. The last time India tasted defeat in Kanpur was back in October 1983, when Clive Llyod-led West Indies, excated revenge for the defeat to the hosts in the final of the World Cup, with a massive win of an innings and 83 runs.
