New Delhi: Bangladesh crumbled under pressure as India won the second Test by seven wickets on the fifth and final day in Kanpur to pull off a 2-0 series sweep on Tuesday.
The visitors were dismissed for 146 runs in their second innings, with India needing 95 runs to win that they achieved in 17.2 overs, losing the wickets of skipper Rohit Sharma (8), Shubman Gill (6) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (51).
After his 72 in the first innings, left handed opener Jaiwal and No.4 Virat Kohli (29 not out) carried India towards the finish line after Mehidy Hasan Miraz (2/44) had reduced the Indians to 34/2.
Trailing by 26 runs when they resumed their second innings at 26/2, Bangladesh batters didn’t display the appetite needed to stay at the wicket in order to save the Test match.
Apart from a 55-run stand between top scorer Shadman Islam (50) and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (19) for the fourth wicket, they couldn’t put together any decent partnership that could have frustrated the Indians.
The only batter to apply himself in the middle was Veteran Mushfiqur Rahim (37), who was the last man to be dismissed a ball before lunch as Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja claimed three wickets apiece.
Bangladesh suffered a collapse to be reduced 94/7 from 90/3 and could never recover as India’s bowlers tight line and length denied any easy scoring opportunities.
Early breakthrough sets tone for India
Veteran off-spinner Ashwin found the breakthrough in the third over of the day when he induced an edge from first-innings centurion Mominul Haque to be caught at leg slip by KL Rahul for two.
Shanto joined Islam and together they kept India at bay for a while till left-arm spinner Jadeja, who took his 300th Test wicket on Monday, bowled the Bangladesh skipper to trigger a collapse.
Soon after Islam fell, almost immediately after reaching his half century flashing outside the off stump to get caught by by Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully off pacer Akash Deep.
In what could be his last Test appearance for Bangladesh, former skipper Shakib Al Hasan was the next to depart, caught and bowled for nought by Jadeja,
Rahim then plodded again but could only delay the inevitable as he was castled on the last ball before lunch in an extended half hour of play.
Bangladesh had earlier been bowled out for 233 in their first innings on day four after two-and-a-half days of action was lost due to wet outfield at the Green Park stadium.
India declared at 258/9 in only 34.4 overs to seize a 52-run lead as they tried to forced a result for a series sweep after winning the opener of the two-match series by 280 runs.
