New Delhi: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday became the fourth-highest run-scorer for India in the One-Day Internationals (ODIs) format. The 37-year-old senior batter attained the feat during the second ODI match between India and Sri Lanka played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
While chasing the moderate target of 241 against Charith Asalanka & Co, Rohit smashed a brisk half-century to lead the proceedings, it was his 57th fifty-plus score in the format, which came up in just 29 balls.. He scored 64 runs off 44 balls with the help of five boundaries and four sixes at a strike rate of 145.45. He was dismissed by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay after Pathum Nissanka put brilliant efforts in the field to complete the Indian captain’s catch.
Following his 256th ODI innings, Rohit Sharma has accumulated 10,831 runs at an average of 49.23. He surpassed former captain Rahul Dravid in the list of most ODI runs scored by Indian batters. Dravid scored 10,768 runs in 314 ODI innings at 39.15 with the help of 82 fifties and 12 centuries before he retired from the format in 2011.
Rohit is now only behind Sachin Tendulkar (18,426), Virat Kohli (13,886), and Sourav Ganguly (11,221) among Indians with most ODI runs.
Rohit Sharma just one six away for another record
Rohit hit four sixes in his blistering knock against Sri Lanka in the second ODI. Each six was dispatched against a different bowler with Asitha Fernando (7th over), Akila Dananjaya (8th over), Kamindu Mendis (10th over), and Dunith Wellalage (13th over) being on the receiving end.
The Indian opener has now smashed 330 sixes from 256 ODI innings, which leaves him third on the list behind Chris Gayle (331) and Shahid Afridi (351). If Rohit can hit two more sixes in the final ODI match against Sri Lanka on Wednesday (August 7) then he will go past Gayle’s tally to become the second most six-hitting batter in the format.
