New Delhi: Despite finishing third in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-2025 table, India will bag almost the same prize money as the previous edition’s winner, Australia, after the International Cricket Council more than doubled the WTC purse ahead of the final between South Africa and Australia, starting at Lord’s on June 11, Wednesday.

ICC’s decision to boost the prize money to $3.6 million for this edition helped India earn $ 1,440,000 (approximately Rs 12.32 crore) despite failing to qualify for the final, which would have been their third successive WTC final appearance. The amount is almost equal to the prize money of New Zealand (2021) and Australia (2023) earned after winning the first two editions.

Big boost to the WTC prize money

As a result of the boost, South Africa and Australia, the No.1 and No.2 teams, respectively, will also enjoy the benefits of an increased purse.

The winners of the 2023-2025 edition of the WTC will take home a prize money of $3.6 million, more than double what previous winners earned after winning the first two editions of ICC’s flagship red-ball tournament.

The runner-ups, with a $2.1 million prize money, will also earn more than in the previous two editions.

The winners of the 2021 and 2023 editions won $1.6 million each, while the losing finalists recieved $800,000.

“The increase in prize money exhibits the ICC’s efforts to prioritise Test cricket as it looks to build on the momentum of the first three cycles of the nine-team competition,” the ICC said.

South Africa finished on top of the table after winning a pair of series at home against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, ending with 69.44 percentage points. Meanwhile, holders Australia finished with 67.54 points ahead of India, who finished with 50.00. Despite leading the table for a long period, India failed to qualify for the final after a 0-3 defeat to New Zealand at home and a 3-1 loss in Australia.

Australia will be aiming to become the first team to have a chance at defending the WTC title. The Pat Cummins-led side defeated India in the final at the same venue two years ago.
