New Delhi: The third day at the Paris Olympics 2024 for India could be another medal affair as shooters Ramita Jindal and Arjun Babuta, who qualified for the final event of 10m air rifle in respective categories on Sunday, are on the verge of bringing more laurels for the nation.
Both will be eyeing a gold after showcasing sheer grit in the qualifying round as Ramita finished fifth while Arjun ended up seventh to reach the finals. Along with the shooting duo, the men’s archery team can also target medals and if qualified, can vie for gold medal as well.
The second-day participants brought mixed results for India as the likes of PV Sindhu, Sreeja Akula, Balraj Panwar, HS Prannoy, Manika Batra, and Nikhat Zareen showed promise while veterans Achantha Sharath Kamal, Harmeet Desai, Rohan Bopanna, N Sriram Balaji, and Sumit Nagal all crashed out of the Games.
The only silver lining for India was their first medal at the marquee event, won by young shooter Manu Bhaker, who clinched a bronze at the final event of women’s 10m air pistol. She became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting and also opened India’s account at the grand event.
The day started with Ramita making it to the final followed by PV Sindhu’s group match win to begin the campaign on a high. Balraj further qualified for the quarterfinal in sculls and Akula claimed a win to begin her campaign on a high as well. Babuta too qualified for finals followed by flop shows from Sharath Kamal and the swimmers Srihari Nataraj and Dhinidhi Desinghu, who packed their bags for home.
