New Delhi: India are in deep trouble in their first innings against Australia in the ongoing third Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. Despite half-centuries from KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, India are still far from reaching the score needed to avoid follow-on in the Test match. After a top-order collapse on Day 3, Indian batters did well to show some resistance against Australia on Day 4.
However, the resistance couldn’t last long. While Rohit Sharma departed cheaply on 10, Rahul and Jadeja notched up half-centuries apiece to help India fight back. Rahul slammed a brilliant 84-run knock and shared an important stand of 67 runs with Jadeja for the sixth wicket. Jadeja combined with all-rounder Nitish Reddy to add another valuable partnership of 53 runs for the 7th wicket.
How many runs do India need to avoid follow-on?
However, despite their efforts, India are far from reaching the score of 246 runs which they need to avoid following on in the Gabba Test. Reddy was dismissed for 16 off 61 balls in the 60th over with India reeling at 194/7, trailing Australia by 251 runs and 52 runs away from reaching 246 to avoid the follow-on in the Test match.
The onus is on Jadeja, who has already notched up his 22nd Test half-century, to combine with the tail-enders and ensure India manage to breach the 246-run mark. Avoiding the follow-on would be crucial for India if they want to save the Test match as it will force Australia to bat again in their second innings.
With only one day remaining in the Test match, Australia would want to enforce the follow-on to improve their chances of securing a victory. Australian bowlers have constantly troubled the Indian batters in the series so far and will be fancying their chances once again if the visitors are asked to continue batting in their second innings on Day 4.
