India record best ever Paralympics medal haul but still behind Tokyo Games in THIS aspect

New Delhi: India scripted history on Tuesday by registering their best-ever medal haul in the history of the Paralympics. The Indian contingent surpassed the last edition’s number of medals on the back of a sensational performance by the track and field athletes on Tuesday.

After a slow start to the Games, Indian athletes produced a brilliant display on Day 5 and Day 6 to win a total of 13 medals. While eight medals came on Monday, five were bagged on Tuesday to take India’s tally to 20 (3 gold, 7 silver, 10 bronze). The medal rush surpassed the previous best tally (19) at the Tokyo Paralympic Games three years ago.

India’s track and field athletes shone for the second consecutive day, bagging five medals – two silver and three bronze to ended day six with 20 medals and at 17th place.

Deepthi Jeevanji (Bronze in 400m T20), Mariyappan Thangavelu (Bronze in Men’s high jump T63), Sharad Kumar (Silver in Men’s high jump T63) Ajeet Singh (Silver in Men’s javelin throw F46) and  Sundar Singh Gurjar (Bronze in Men’s javelin throw F46) bagged the medals on Day 6.

While India went the previous best tally of 19 medals, the country is still behind the Tokyo Games in one aspect.

How India’s Tokyo haul is still ahead of Paris Paralympics?

While India have surpassed the overall tally of 19 medals recorded at Tokyo, their performance in Paris is still behind in one aspect. India had claimed 19 medals (five gold, eight silver and six bronze) at the Tokyo Paralympics and despite reaching the 20-medal mark in Paris remains behind in terms of gold medal victories.

India won five gold in Tokyo but so far in Paris have claimed only three gold medals. This stat, however, can change, as India still have a chance to add medals to their tally.

Avani Lekhara (Shooting), Nitesh Kumar (Badminton) and Sumit Antil (Javelin Throw) are the gold-medal winners from this edition.

Lekhara and Antil both won gold in Tokyo as well.
