New Delhi: Yet again, Suryakumar Yadav rose to the occasion for Mumbai Indians (MI) as this time he helped the team sail into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs with a clinical 59-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday. The two teams locked horns in a virtual quarterfinal clash, eyeing the last playoff berth, and the Mumbai batter came up with a half-century to bag the Player of the Match (POTM) award at the end.
In what was a sweet gesture while receiving the award, Suryakumar dedicated the prize to his wife, Devisha Shetty, and shared a “story” behind doing so. “It’s been 13 games now. My wife told me a sweet story today. She said you’ve got all the awards except POTM. This award is special today. From the team’s point of view, the knock was important, and also, this trophy is for her. She waits for such moments and we celebrate it obviously, looking forward to it,” Surya had said.
As soon as the match concluded, it started raining cats and dogs at the Wankhede, and the presentation ceremony had to be conducted amid the rain pouring down. This forced the dignitaries present to take out their umbrellas, and so did Surya, who not only received the award while holding it, but also gave the complete interview with the same stance.

The swashbuckling batter looked the lone warrior from the MI batting lineup, which was invited to bat first at home as he went on to pile an unbeaten 73 runs off 43 balls, laced with seven fours and four sixes. He powered MI to a daunting total of 180/5 in 20 overs, but in response, DC could only manage 121 in 18.2 overs before getting folded, thanks to a three-fer each from Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah.
“Was important for a single batter to bat till the end. We knew there was one over of 15-20 runs somewhere, so we had to wait till the end. The way Naman came in and shared that energy with me was also a turning point,” Surya added.
