New Delhi: India defeated New Zealand by 4 wickets in the final and clinched their third Champions Trophy title at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, March 9. This is India’s second ICC title in a row after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies.
Chasing a tricky 252-run target, the Men in Blue got off to a great start as captain Rohit Sharma smashed his first fifty of the tournament in 41 balls. He forged a 105-run partnership with Shubman Gill for the first wicket. After the wickets of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma’s departure on 76 helped New Zealand claw back into the match before crucial partnerships from Shreyas Iyer-Axar Patel and KL Rahul-Hardik Pandya put India back ahead.
India eventually sealed the victory with Ravindra Jadeja hitting the winning runs in the final over off fast bowler Will O’Rourke. The victory helped India to clinch their third Champions Trophy title, adding onto victories in 2002 (shared with Sri Lanka) and 2013.
The Champions Trophy victory in Dubai is also India’s seventh ICC title victory since Kapil Dev and Co. clinched the 1983 World Cup at Lord’s. The team have now won two 50-over Cricket World Cups, three Champions Trophies and two T20 World Cups after Australia’s record 10 titles. Rohit also became only the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to win multiple ICC trophies.
