India win 20 medals to record best-ever medal haul at Paralympics, surpass Tokyo Games tally

New Delhi: India extended their tally to 20 medals at the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Monday after a late surge to surpass their tally from the last edition in Tokyo and record their best-ever medal haul in a single edition. India won a total of 19 medals, including 5 gold medals to finish 24th on the Tokyo Paralympics medals table.

Indian para-athletes have propelled the country to the 20-medal mark with several events left at the Paris Paralympics 2024. India reached 20 medals at the ongoing Games after winning a total of 5 medals on Day 6, Tuesday. Deepthi Jeevanji clinched bronze in the women’s 400m T20 final before Ajeet Singh and Sundar Gurjar claimed silver and bronze medals respectively in the men’s javelin throw F46 final.

Sharad Kumar and Mariappan Thangavelu added two more medals to India’s tally in the men’s high jump T63 event to take the country’s tally to 20, going past the haul of 19 medals set at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. India have so far won three gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze medals at the ongoing Paris Games. They won 5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals at the Tokyo Paralympics.

13 medals in last two days for India

India have been on a medal spree at the Paris Paralympics having won an impressive 13 medals in the last two days at the Games. Indian para-athletes won 8 medals, including 2 gold in what was a magical Monday followed by 5 more medals on Tuesday. Jeevanji kicked off India’s medal spree on Tuesday before a late flourish from the javelin and high jump athletes.

On Monday, Sumit Antil and Nitesh Kumar headlined India’s stellar show with a gold medal each. While Antil successfully defended his gold in the men’s javelin throw F64 category with a record effort of 70.59m, para-shuttler Nitesh won his maiden Paralympic gold after beating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell in the men’s singles SL3 badminton final.

Yogesh Kathuniya, Thulasimathi Murugesan and Suhas Yathiraj won silver medals while Manisha Ramadass, Nithya Sri Shivan and the archery pair of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar bagged a bronze medal in their respective events to help India finish with 8 medals in a single day.

On Tuesday, India continued their impressive run in Paris as Jeevanji won bronze in the women’s 400m T20 final. Ajeet won silver medal in the men’s javelin throw F46 final with a throw of 65.62m while Gurjar finished behind him on the podium with a throw of 64.96m. Expectations were high from India’s para high jumpers and they managed to deliver.

Sharad cleared 1.88m in the men’s high jump T63 final to win silver while Thangavelu cleared 1.85m in his first attempt to settle for bronze.

How many medals have India won so far at the Paris Paralympics 2024?

India have so far won a total of 20 medals at the Paris Paralympics, including three gold medals, 7 silver medals and 10 bronze medals. India are currently in the 19th position on the Paralympics 2024 medals table and look set for their best-ever ranking at the Games. With multiple events yet to conclude, India can eye a medal haul of 25 which will keep them in the top 20.
