New Delhi: India’s men and women’s archery teams have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics after topping the rankings among non-qualified nations in both the gender categories.
It will allow India to participate in all five medal events – men’s and women’s team, individual and mixed categories – in the Games, which begins next month.
Apart from India, China qualified in the men’s section while Indonesia were the second team in the women’s category to earn quota places for team events that will have 12 sides in each section, while five teams will be permitted to compete in mixed team competitions.
It was the first time that team quotas were given to the two top ranking countries after the conclusion of the three-leg Olympic qualifiers.
South Korea, Turkey and Japan qualified in the men’s section in the first Olympic Qualifier at the World Archery Championships in Berlin last year where Germany, Mexico booked their spots in women’s category.
In the second leg, whch was a continental qualifier, Kazakhstan and South Korea grabbed the men’s and women’s team spots respectively from Asia. The Pan-America slots went to Colombia and USA.
Italy (men) and the Netherlands (women) got the quota slots from the European leg while the final Olympic Qualifier was held in Antalya, Turkey, last week.
In the men’s division, Mexico, Chinese Taipei, Great Britain qualified while China, Malaysia, Great Britain and Chinese Taipei secured the spot for the women’s section.
The Indian contingent will have 40-year-old Tarundeep Rai, in what will be his fourth appearance at Olympics, as will be former World No. 1 Deepika Kumari.
Dhiraj Bommadevara, Ankita Bhakat and Bhajan Kaur will make their debuts, Pravin Jadhav will be appearing in his second consecutive Games.
India squad:
Men: Tarundeep Rai, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Pravin Jadhav.
Women: Deepika Kumari, Bhajan Kaur and Ankita Bhakat.
