New Delhi: The Indian Railways in a major move decided to wash train blankets every 15 days instead of once a month took a big decision keeping in mind passenger facilities. In an exclusive interaction with TV9Bharatvarsh in Guwahati, Railway engineer Sheshadri shared this development. The move has come in response to customer feedback regarding blankets in which they complained that these were dirty.
Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had also informed the Winter Session of the Parliament about the frequency with which the Railways’ washes bankets.
How long does it take to wash train blankets
Sheshadri shared that each blanket is washed every 45 minutes. The Railways’ facility is capable of drying blankets up to 100 kg in one go, he added. Each blanket is segregated and divided into 4 parts. It is then told that we first divide the blanket into 4 parts. Each of these blankets are washed at 80-90 degrees before drying. The entire exercise takes 45 minutes and a few minutes more. These blankets are then packed and sent back.
How often does Railways wash bedsheets
Guwahati Coach Depot manager Sudarshan Bhardwaj told TV9 Bharatvarsh that bedsheets are washed in 45-60 minutes. The Railways change bedsheets every day and blankets every 15 days. The Railways washes bedsheets in a high-speed laundry machine by weight. The machine can wash up to 65 kg of bedsheets in one go. Each bedsheet is washed, dried, and steam-ironed.

Washing train blankets costs RS 23.59 per blanket, The cost of washing the Railways’ bed roll is Rs 23.58, according to Bhardwaj. The Railways checks each bedsheet for its shine. Each bedsheet lasts one year, according to Vishnupad Goswami from the Indian Railways’ Guwahati laundry facility. The Railways’ bedsheet loses its shine after 5 washes. A bedsheet is retired if it fails the shine test. A bed sheet must retain at least 82 per cent shine for it to pass the test, according to Goswami. Railways’ pillows and towels last about 9 months. Meanwhiel Railway curtains last a year while blankets last 2 years, Goswami said.
